Jonas Schmänk is a grantholder at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and an external PhD student in the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. As part of the unit on Defence and External Security at the JRC, his work focuses on developing analytical frameworks to support decision-making in the preparation and defence against hybrid threats. He previously worked for various German research institutions and corporations, focusing on technology management and supply chain resilience. He holds MSc and BSc degrees in mechanical engineering and business administration from RWTH Aachen and has been a visiting student at Lund University and the University of Oxford.

Critical infrastructure faces increasingly complex and evolving threats. Cyberattacks are growing more sophisticated, terrorism remains a concern, and climate change is making natural disasters more unpredictable. New dangers such as drone attacks, misuse of artificial intelligence, evolving hybrid threats and state sponsored attacks further complicate the landscape. A key challenge is how to effectively identify, monitor, and understand these diverse and emerging threats.
