Born in the UK, Sue also holds Belgian citizenship and has lived in Belgium for more than 20 years. A native English speaker, she is also fluent in French and can speak German. She has worked in EU affairs for more than 30 years, more than 20 of these being for international member organisations. Her interest in improving services to members inspired her to undertake a Master’s Degree in Leading Innovation and Change, for which her thesis was about adding value in member organisations. She also has a Postgraduate Certificate in EU Law.
From 2013-2021, Sue worked in the field of construction as a lobbyist, representing contractors. As Director of Technical and Environmental Affairs at the European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC) and President of the European Council for Construction Research, Development and Innovation (ECCREDI), she worked with both the European Commission and the European Parliament on relevant policy developments affecting the industry. She is passionate about construction and, whilst at FIEC, worked to promote new technologies, digitalisation and innovation. A collaborator and networker, she has always enjoyed working with other relevant stakeholders and joined EFCA on 1 July 2022. She believes that engineers are critical not only to the delivery of EU policies, but to the economy, environment and society. They are also key to safety and security; and with the backdrop of intensifying geopolitical tensions, they are needed more than ever, as key partners for national, regional and local governments, to support civil preparedness. With her colleagues in the secretariat, the EFCA Board and the member associations in 27 countries, she is working on the priorities that have been identified by the federation. These are aimed at achieving a sustainable, climate-proof built environment, that meets the needs of all citizens; delivered by a resilient, green and digital construction ecosystem, in which consulting engineers will lead with innovative solutions.
