Hacker Owns and Tries to Sell BBC Server on Christmas Day

A Russian hacker with aliases including ‘HASH’ and ‘Rev0lver’ tried to sell access to a BBC FTP server on Christmas Day. As proof of ownership he posted files that could only have been stolen from the site. By Saturday 28th December the BBC is believed to have regained control of the server, but has declined to comment, saying simply, “We do not comment on security issues.”

The episode was reported by Reuters on Sunday. It had been discovered by Hold Security, described by Reuters as “a cybersecurity firm in Milwaukee that monitors underground cyber-crime forums in search of stolen information.”
