Dr. Girgin works for the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) which is the Commission’s science and knowledge service that provides independent scientific advice and support to EU policy. As a member of the TechRisk research group, he is carrying out scientific R&D tasks in the field of natural-hazard impacts on hazardous critical infrastructure, such as industrial installations and pipeline networks involving hazardous substances. His research topics include development of risk analysis methodologies for technological accidents triggered by natural hazards (Natechs), Natech early-warning systems, multi-hazard Natech risk analysis, and Natech accident analysis for lessons learned purposes. He holds BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering and MSc degree in Geodetic and Geographic Information Technologies. He has more than two decades of research and consultancy experience in academic, private and scientific organisations. He is an expert in scientific software development, including web-based applications and GIS tools. He has designed and developed European Commission’s Rapid Natech Risk Analysis and Mapping System (RAPID-N) and Natech Database (eNatech).
